By the way - Australian Slang

Hier ein paar australische Begriffe, die ab und zu zu Verständnisproblemen geführt haben. Für "eggplant" und "capsicum" hab ich erst eine ganze Weile gebraucht um rauszufinden, was die Begriffe eigentlich bedeuten und dann noch eine ganze Weile sie im Kopf zu behalten. Am Ende meines Australienaufenhaltes konnte ich dann sogar einen Engländer verwirren in dem ich die Wörter "goon" und "esky" in einem Satz verwendet habe. Er starrte mich mit großen Augen an und fragte dann kleinlaut, was denn die beiden Wörter bedeuten würden ;o)

billabong - a water hole
billy - teapot
bloke - man, guy
bloody - very
brekkie - breakfast
Brizzie - Brisbane, state capital of Queensland
bush tucker - bush food, Australian native food plants
BYO - unlicensed restaurant where you have to Bring Your Own alcoholic drinks, also at private parties or barbecues
capsicum - bell pepper
coffee: flat white - espresso with milk (Milchkaffee), short black - espresso, long black - espresso diluted with water, similar to an Americano in the U.S.
cozzie - swimming costume
downunder - Australia and New Zealand
eggplant - aubergine
esky - transportable icebox
fair enough - expression, when the other person did a good deal or when you want to agree
G'Day - hello!
goon - cheap box wine, packaged as a "bag-in-a-box"
heaps - a lot of
Hungry Jack’s - Burger King
joey - baby kangaroo
Kiwi - person from New Zealand
mate - good friend or used as a greeting
mozzie - mosquito
No worries! - Expression of forgiveness or reassurance (No problem; forget about it; I can do it; Yes, I'll do)
outback - interior of Australia
petrol - gas
lollies - sweets, candy
Oz - Australia
salty - saltwater crocodile
sheila - a woman
sickie - a day off work due to illness
stubby - small beer bottle
stubby holder - polystyrene insulated holder for a stubby
swag - rolled up bedding etc. for sleeping outside without a tent – best Australian invention
ta - thanks
tomato sauce - ketchup
too easy - expression, when something was quite easy to organize
vedgies - vegetables
you are a star/legend - expression when somebody did a really good job
